San Antonio Spurs Receive: F Marvin Bagley III

Sacramento Kings Receive: SAS 2021 2nd Round Pick, SAS 2023 2nd Round Pick

Both the Spurs and Kings are still very much alive in the Western Conference playoff picture at this point in the season, but neither one of them are likely to make a deep postseason run should they make the playoffs. Both teams still have a lot of growing to do in terms of developing their young talents further and are still a couple pieces away from being real threats.

With LaMarcus Aldridge no longer being on the Spurs roster after being bought out of his contract and DeMar DeRozan set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, it would make a lot of sense for the Spurs to look to add another young frontcourt option to pair with Jakob Poeltl in the low-post.

The reason Marvin Bagley III could be a great trade target for them is because of how versatile he is as a 6’11” power-forward. Whether it is in the low-post or on the perimeter, Bagley has shown the ability to score the ball in many ways and uses his athleticism to his advantage against smaller, weaker defenders.

He is currently sidelined right now with a broken hand, but in 37 games with Sacramento this season, Bagley has averaged 13.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and has shot 50.2% from the floor, 35.4% from three-point range.

The fact that he is only 21-years-old is another reason why the Spurs will likely be interested in Marvin Bagley III, especially since they are figuring out ways to continue building their young core. He could not only be the final piece to their young roster, but he could easily be a player that they can build around in the frontcourt.

With a ton of potential to continue to grow into a high-level frontcourt player and some fantastic young guards around him in San Antonio, Marvin Bagley III could see his career take off with the Spurs, especially given their success in the past with versatile forwards like him who can play in the low-post.

The Kings did look to trade Marvin Bagley III at the NBA trade deadline this year, but they did not receive a ton of interest, nor did they receive any offers they liked. With the Spurs only offering up two second-round picks in this deal, the Kings may entertain other offers as this trade does not present the best value to them, but let’s take a look at both San Antonio and Sacramento to see if this trade truly makes sense for both teams.
