Why This Trade Would Benefit The Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks denied NBA trade rumors leading up to the NBA trade deadline but there has been too much noise for them to be completely untrue. Dallas originally acquired Kristaps Porzingis in a blockbuster deal with the New York Knicks and he could be involved in another in the offseason. It would certainly be interesting to see the Mavericks decide to make this trade but it would not be the worst option.

Kristaps Porzingis is set to make a ton of money in his contract. He is in the second of a five-year deal signed with Dallas and is owed roughly $130 million over the rest. This is a hefty price tag for the Mavericks to pay for a player that has not been healthy during his tenure. This could be the factor that sends Porzingis out of Dallas.

As far as the return, Dallas would get a ton back. Both James Wiseman and Andrew Wiggins are starting-caliber players that can contribute right away. The draft picks that they are getting back return to the Minnesota Timberwolves. This means that they will be near the top of the draft. When looking at the total package, it is a win-win for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks can develop James Wiseman by being a frequent high pick-and-roll and DHO operator with Luka Doncic. The game is made easy for play-finishers alongside Doncic and Wiseman’s athleticism and frame would be fully utilized. Being signed to a rookie deal that later comes with restricted free agency only helps, too.

Mark Cuban is an owner who likes to make big moves in hopes of winning championships. The Mavericks are far away from that and could look to add some more pieces around Doncic.
