Why this trade makes sense for the Orlando Magic

With the Orlando Magic’s playoff hopes gone after trading away their three best players, it would make sense for them to want to acquire as many draft picks as possible. With young talents in Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony, Jonathan Isaac and Chuma Okeke all expected to be 100% entering next season, the Magic definitely have a solid young core, but will look to add even more young talent to their roster over the years. 

Although they will be rebuilding, the Magic will still look to be as competitive as possible, which is why they could be interested in acquiring Seth Curry in the offseason. He is one of the top three-point shooters in the league and while they could utilize him early on next season, they will ultimately look to flip him for yet another draft pick at next year’s NBA trade deadline.

Plenty of teams would be interested in Curry as they make a late season push for the playoffs next season, which is why the Magic could look to get him early on in the offseason with a long-term plan in mind to get even more draft compensation.

Ultimately, the Magic have nothing to lose right now roster wise and it will just take time for them to turn all of their draft picks and young players into something special to hopefully contend with. 

Getting a first-round pick in this trade, that will likely convey over even though it is protected, and trade bait in Seth Curry for next season sets the Magic up to gain even more assets moving forward, which is exactly what they should be looking for in a Terrence Ross oriented trade.
