Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?
The Boston Celtics adding Kemba Walker last year was supposed to finally get them back to the NBA Finals, but as the trend has been for years now, the Celtics lost in the Eastern Conference Finals again. Obviously, Kemba Walker was not the answer and it should be clear to Boston’s front office that they need to add depth on their bench.
With Kemba Walker on this team, the Celtics take a massive cap hit and will not have the financial flexibility they need to surround their star talents with high-level bench talents that can contribute meaningful minutes.
Bringing in Jalen Brunson and Josh Richardson for bench depth, even if it is for one season, could do wonders for the Celtics and bring their offense to new heights. A lot of the Celtics’ offense last year revolved around three guys: Kemba Walker, Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum. Teams basically put all of their attention on these three guys last year down the stretch and as a result, the Celtics failed to score when it mattered most.

The same can be said about this season, as the Cetlics have really struggled all season long to find production on their roster outside of their All-Star talents. Freeing up cap space by trading away Walker and getting a future first-round pick out of this deal gives the Celtics exactly what they need to take a step back and try to turn this team back into a championship contender quickly.
Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown can easily be the pinnacles of this franchise and be championship-caliber players, but they will need a supporting cast to play off of. Right now, Boston does not have that and until they do, there is no chance that this team wins a title.
