DeMar DeRozan – San Antonio Spurs

There was a ton of speculation leading up to the NBA trade deadline that the Spurs could potentially look to move All-Star wing DeMar DeRozan, but they ultimately ended up holding onto him, even though he is in the final year of his contract and is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

This is definitely the best scenario for DeMar DeRozan because he can now capitalize on his pending free agency. Plenty of teams will definitely be lining up to offer the 4x All-Star a contract when free agency begins, but now, his value is definitely going to increase because of everything he does with the Spurs.

Whether they make the playoffs or not, DeMar DeRozan is still their best player and one of their only productive players, so his value can only go up with them. If he was to go to another team with other All-Stars, sure, he would have had a chance to potentially make a playoff run in the last year of his contract, but ultimately, he would not have been “the guy” with another team.

He gets to fill that role with the San Antonio Spurs and as a result, he is going to continue to play at a high-level and see his price tag for free agency increase. Financially, staying with the Spurs was the best thing that could have happened to DeMar DeRozan because he now not only has a choice of where he signs in the offseason, but he can maximize the terms of his contract.

If the Spurs had traded DeMar DeRozan, then he would have been another great player on another great team and his stats would have been overlooked, especially if he was not the best player on a potential championship-contending team. Playoffs or not, DeMar DeRozan is the best player on the Spurs and is going to increase his value for his pending free agency because of the impact he has with the Spurs.
