The Toronto Raptors are an NBA team that many people are keeping an eye on as the trade deadline is only hours away. While everyone holds their breath waiting to see where Kyle Lowry will be traded to, they finalized a different trade.
The Raptors have agreed to trade Normal Powell to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Gary Trent Jr. and Rodney Hood.
This is an interesting trade for Portland, as Norman Powell offers similar production to what they were getting from Trent Jr. and Hood. He gives them a guard that can score the ball from multiple levels and gets after it defensively.

The biggest takeaway from this deal for the Trail Blazers is the open roster spot they now have. They could make another deal before the deadline or be players in the ever-competitive buyout market following the trade deadline.
For Toronto, they get something in return for Norman Powell, whom many believe will decline his player option and look to cash in as a free agent this upcoming summer. Trent Jr. played very well in place of the injured CJ McCollum and could be a long-term piece in the backcourt alongside Fred VanVleet. His scoring prowess can help offset what the team is losing by trading away Powell.

Hood is a steady veteran working his way back from an injury suffered last season. When healthy, he has proven he can be a useful scorer off the bench.
With this deal, Toronto made sure that they would remain competitive in the Eastern Conference playoff race. They are only 1.5 games out of a play-in spot so the playoffs are still a possibility.
With the Powell deal now complete, everyone will turn their attention to Lowry, who looks like he is on his way out of Toronto as well.
