Why This Trade Would Benefit The Detroit Pistons
The Detroit Pistons were aggressive in the offseason signing players like Jerami Grant and Mason Plumlee. Once they completely retooled the frontcourt, it was obvious that Griffin’s days were numbered.
Now that Blake Griffin is gone and Derrick Rose was traded, the Pistons could continue to shed contracts. Grant has $63 million on his deal and that could be more room for the Pistons to work with.
This will not be a move because of Grant’s play. He has been the leader of the Pistons but they have not been able to put things together on the court. Grant is having a good year and could get a nice return given his current value.
The Pistons’ rebuild is going to be much longer than three years, which is the duration of Grant’s contract. This is why the team could ultimately decide to move him and get back some younger players along with draft capital.

That is exactly what the team would be getting here in the form of Frank Ntilikina and Obi Toppin. They would also get a first-round pick from the Dallas Mavericks in this year’s draft. The front office has to load up on as many assets as possible as they continue to figure out the best way to build a roster.
