NBA scout says T-Wolves should trade D’Angelo Russell at deadline

D’Angelo Russell and the Minnesota Timberwolves are heading toward another lottery after the 2020-21 NBA season. That normally brings joy to a franchise’s fan base, but for the Timberwolves, it brings more anxiousness as they may not even get to use that pick.

Minnesota sent that pick, which is top-three protected, to the Golden State Warriors as part of the Russell deal, along with a 2021 second-round pick, which looks like it will be the first pick in the second round.

If the Timberwolves could, they would assuredly do that trade over. Russell has not been able to help get the team over the hump, as they currently have the worst record in the NBA at 7-29. They are the only franchise that has yet to win double-digit games this season.

Things don’t look like they will improve, as Russell is sidelined a total of 4-6 weeks after undergoing surgery on his knee. He has played in 20 games this season for the Timberwolves, averaging 19.3 points, 5.1 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game.

While moving on from Russell at this point would admit failure, it is something that an NBA scout believes should happen.

“This Timberwolves team isn’t going anywhere and it’s time to re-tool. Trade D’Angelo Russell for the most value you can get. He isn’t a player to build around, but his value is still decent.” – NBA scout on Timberwolves trading D’Angelo Russell.

That is some harsh criticism for Russell, but the scout may be right. Minnesota is already the fourth team Russell has played for despite being in only his sixth season in the league. While they likely won’t receive a pick as valuable as the one they sent out for Russell, he should still garner something worthwhile as a 25-year-old former All-Star.

If Minnesota does decide to go in that direction, however, they will have a bigger issue on their hands in what to do with Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns wanted D’Angelo Russell on the team, so if they ship him out after only 32 games in town, it will likely disgruntle their star center.

If the Timberwolves decides to move on from Russell, the prediction of the New York Knicks landing an All-Star who demands a trade would increase significantly, as Towns would likely be next to ask for a trade out of town.
