Why This Trade Makes Sense For The San Antonio Spurs
While they are very much in the playoff picture in the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs have some big decisions to make regarding the future of some of their veteran talents. LaMarcus Aldridge, DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay are all in the final years of their contracts and the Spurs may elect to let them play through their contracts, but all three guys still hold a lot of value on the open market and could be prime trade target at the trade deadline for many playoff contending teams.
San Antonio could get some really good value for a player like Rudy Gay, which is why they could elect to trade him. The Heat are a solid trade partner for the Spurs because of all of the assets they have to potentially offer up.
This is just one trade scenario the Heat could offer for Rudy Gay, as they could offer a bunch of young players and or draft picks for the veteran forward. Even though he has been a consistent, veteran presence on the Spurs this season, trading Gay opens up more minutes for guys like Keldon Johnson, Lonnie Walker and Trey Lyles.
All three of these younger players have a lot of potential and are guys that represent the future of the Spurs organization. Having them take on a bigger role now and make a potential playoff push could be exactly what they need to grow into great players for San Antonio to build with moving forward.

Kelly Olynyk is a steady veteran player that can play his role perfectly in San Antonio while still helping them win games and K.Z. Okpala is a young forward that has potential to grow into a solid two-way wing. Not only can the Spurs build for the future in this trade, but it does not really negatively affect them since Olynyk can replicate the success Gay had on the court.
Trading away Rudy Gay at the trade deadline probably makes more sense than keeping him at this point for the Spurs, which is why this trade makes a ton of sense for them moving forward.
