Why This Trade Would Benefit The Detroit Pistons
We have seen rebuilding teams around the league sign players to short-term deals in recent years. This is something that Detroit did with Ellington. He is on a one-year deal this season that is paying him $2.5 million. With that deal, it does not matter whether the Pistons trade him or keep him around.
If they decide to part ways, at least they would get some sort of return. It is not completely necessary because of the size of the contract. Poole is an intriguing player coming back to Detroit in this deal. The Pistons are a team looking to get younger.
They drafted Killian Hayes with the seventh-overall pick in the draft and are hoping that he is the point guard of the future. He has been limited with an injury but the franchise has high hopes. For a player like Ellington, any return is a good return.

Detroit has to make much bigger moves if they want to compete right away. This scenario with the Warriors will be one that accomplishes a goal but not in a big way. It will have to come in the form of a blockbuster or two to have a real impact on the Pistons.
