The Celtics are shooting 36.7% from three-point range as a team. They could be in the market for another perimeter threat and someone who can draw some attention coming off the bench. They don’t necessarily have someone that can thrive in handoffs and coming off pindowns like Doug McDermott.

There is a need for balance in the Celtics’ offense where someone with an off-ball oriented skill-set can play on the wing alongside Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kemba Walker. This is a vital element to fielding successful lineup combinations.

Indiana has shown that they are interested in dumping players on expiring contracts. McDermott is in the final year of his deal and is set to make $7.3 million this season. With him having such an impressive season, it’s no guarantee they can bring him back.

In return, the Pacers would land a first- and second-round pick in this year’s draft. That is not a bad deal to send away someone like Doug McDermott, who is averaging 13.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assists so far this season.

Let’s take a closer look and see how this deal impacts both sides right away this season.
