Why This Trade Would Benefit The Dallas Mavericks
After a competitive series against the Los Angeles Clippers down in the NBA Bubble, the Mavericks came into the season with postseason hopes. The duo of Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis was supposed to turn Dallas into consistent contenders. If one of the two can stay on the floor, the idea goes away.
The first benefit to this deal for the Mavericks would be if they want to dump some salary. Porzingis signed a five-year, $153.8 million extension after he was traded. With Drummond, he is in the final year of his deal so Dallas would have options.
They could choose to re-sign him at a much lower price tag or attempt to flip him in another deal if they feel the need, Garland is an intriguing part of this deal. He has shown a great ability to season and could be a nice piece along with Luka Doncic.

One thing that we know is that Cuban and the Mavericks are interested in competing. This is a deal that could point them further in that direction but they would have to have further plans.
