The Golden State Warriors have surprised some people this season as they currently sit in seventh place in the Western Conference with a record of 18-15. Stephen Curry has returned to MVP form and Draymond Green has helped shore things up on the defensive end of the court.

Despite that, the Warriors organization knows 2021 isn’t their season, as they are not legitimate contenders. They have a chance to be in 2022 again when Klay Thompson returns from injury. They also hold arguably the best trade asset in the league in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 2021 first-round pick. It is top-3 protected this season but becomes unprotected in 2022.

If the Warriors are going to add a piece to push their title window open further with the Curry/Thompson/Green nucleus, this could be their time to strike. That is where Kelly Oubre comes in.

Golden State could target someone such as Bradley Beal and would need some contracts to matchup as a result. Kelly Oubre, who is an impending free agent, could be dangled as an expiring deal to help a team clear some cap space. That team would also get a look at Oubre to decide if they want to keep him long-term.

A package involving Kelly Oubre or Andrew Wiggins, depending on the contract situation, along with the Timberwolves’ pick and possibly James Wiseman would be a good starting point in negotiations.

Or, Golden State could target someone such as Lonzo Ball and use Kelly Oubre’s expiring contract as a selling point to the low-budget New Orleans Pelicans, who may not be inclined to sign Ball to a long-term deal as a restricted free agent this upcoming offseason.
