3 trade scenarios for Kristaps Porzingis the Mavs could consider

Kristaps Porzingis’ name has been brought up in NBA trade rumors recently after some reports surfaced that the Mavericks “quietly” approached teams about their interest level in the former All-Star big man. No trades ever surfaced and owner Mark Cuban has denied all reports that he and the Mavericks have looked to trade Porzingis, but this situation in Dallas is definitely something to monitor as the trade deadline is only four weeks away.

This would be a huge move for the Mavericks to make, not only because Porzingis is their second-best player on their roster, but because of what they traded away to get him from the Knicks. With Doncic and Porzingis, it was expected that the Mavericks could make a big leap in the Western Conference, but that has not been the case this year as they are just 14-15 and struggling against some of the top teams in the conference.

A lot of their problems have been defensively, as they currently rank 23rd in the league in points allowed per game, but Porzingis also does not look like his old, dominant self. Maybe he is still getting back to full speed after a meniscus injury suffered last season in the NBA Bubble, but whatever the case may be, Porzingis’ struggles have negatively affected the Mavs’ chances for success.

Unless this team makes a big move near the deadline to either add another All-Star caliber talent or move the Latvian big man, the Mavs are probably going to be fighting to make the playoffs up to the final game of the season. Other than Luka Doncic, there is really nothing special about this year’s Dallas team, which is a shame because of all the high expectations placed on them coming into the 2020-21 season.

If the Mavericks decide to move on from Kristaps Porzingis, it is really unknown what kind of value he will hold on the market. He has not been playing like his former All-Star self and with him being owed close to $160M through 2023, if he was to opt into his final year player option, it may be difficult for Dallas to get a lot of value in a trade for him. This will certainly be something to monitor in NBA trade rumors.

Nonetheless, let’s take a look at some trade scenarios that could interest the Mavericks if they were to trade Kristaps Porzingis right now.
