The Dallas Mavericks put together historic offensive results last season large in part due to the Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis duo taking the court together. The two NBA stars thrived alongside each other and were able to formulate an intriguing one-two punch.
The pairing has been far from perfect for the Mavericks, though. Where the greatest pitfalls have occurred has been with Kristaps Porzingis’ repeated issues with injuries. When Porzingis was ruled out for Monday’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies due to back soreness, it was his 12th missed game of the season. This has caused Luka Doncic to face significant pressure.
According to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer, an assistant general manager told him how the Mavericks ‘definitely sniffed around’ the possibility of trading Kristaps Porzingis.
“They’ve definitely sniffed around on him,” an assistant general manager told B/R. “They’re taking the temperature, because they know at some point it’s gonna come around.”
It’s become a challenge to rely on Kristaps Porzingis to be healthy. This was even an issue in the NBA Bubble when the Mavericks needed him the most. He was unable to finish the Mavericks’ first round series with the Los Angeles Clippers and that proved to be a pivotal factor in their defeat.
When Kristaps Porzingis is healthy and available, there’s no denying his rare skill-set in the frontcourt being valuable. Having a 7-foot-3 big man who can knock down three-pointers from the parking lot and block shots on the other end is a real asset.
If the Dallas Mavericks do end up wanting to move on from Kristaps Porzingis, he will be the hottest name among the available players in NBA trade rumors. Many teams will be looking to get a player with his skill-set and view a deal as worth the gamble.
