Golden State Warriors Receive: F Doug McDermott, MIA 2022 2nd Round Pick (via IND), IND 2023 2nd Round Pick

Indiana Pacers Receive: C Kevon Looney, G Jordan Poole, GSW 2025 1st Round Pick (Lottery-Protected)

If the Warriors were to trade for a player like Doug McDermott, who is owed $7.3M this season, they would likely have to trade Kevon Looney since they would not be willing to part with Kelly Oubre Jr. or Andrew Wiggins, at least for McDermott. The Warriors have reportedly shown interest in trading Oubre Jr. but with him playing at a high-level, they may hold onto him this year.

Kevon Looney on the other hand has one year left on his contract after this season and while he has been a key role player for them off-the-bench, really helping them on the defensive side of things, they may look to leverage him for more long-term success.

Doug McDermott is a very reliable offensive player and over the years with the Pacers, he has really turned into a solid bench player and potential sixth-man. He is now in his 7th season in the NBA and is having a career year, averaging 13.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and shooting 51.1% from the floor, 35.5% from three-point range.

Giving up Looney would definitely hurt the Warriors’ frontcourt, but adding McDermott would allow them to roll out a smaller lineup that is more deadly offensively. Three-point shooting is a staple of the Warriors’ offense, which is exactly why Doug McDermott could fit right in.

While Indiana has had a lot of success early on in the year, looking like one of the better teams in the East without two of their better players not in the lineup, they could be open to trading McDermott if they can receive some immediate value. Outside of Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner, this team does not have much frontcourt depth, which is why Kevon Looney could be a factor for them.

Both teams would be giving up players that have had a big impact for them both off-the-bench and in the starting lineup, but this trade could make a lot of sense for both sides. Now, let’s take a closer look as to why each team would want to make this trade.
