Dallas Mavericks

It is very clear that this Dallas Mavericks team is not nearly as strong of a three-point shooting team this year as they were last year, but a lot of the Mavericks problems stem from their frontcourt. With Kristaps Porzingis missing the first part of the season, the Mavericks had virtually no reliable options in their frontcourt and even with him back, they still have a lack of production there.

Luka Doncic is this team’s best player and is also their leading rebounder this year, which is one of their main problems. This team has no reliable frontcourt play, which is why acquiring Blake Griffin and bolstering their depth in the low-post is vital.

Not only can Griffin hold his own in the paint, helping on the offensive and defensive glass, but he has the ability to step outside the arc and knock down perimeter shots. For his career, he is a 33.1% three-point shooter and while he is not an immediate threat, he provides the Mavericks with that extra shooter they do not have.

Dwight Powell and Willie Cauley-Stein have been really disappointing for the Mavericks this season and unless they get some help for Porzingis in the frontcourt, this team is going to continue to struggle against teams that have a reliable big man. Kristaps Porzingis is still getting back to full speed and does not look like the dominant All-Star he was a few years back, which is another reason why this team needs to add frontcourt help.

While there are question marks surrounding Blake Griffin’s ability to play at a high-level and his durability, the Mavericks need to be willing to take on these types of risks if they are going to do anything this season. This team really needs that third, reliable option and while Griffin is not the All-Star he once was, there is a lot of belief that he can still contribute 20-25 minutes per game.

Dallas would not need Griffin to go out there on the court and take over all of the scoring production, but instead, provide them with an experienced, veteran option who is more than capable of making plays. The Mavericks need something and getting Blake Griffin on a minimum contract could definitely help them more than it could potentially hurt them.
