Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics have been a team that has been linked to Blake Griffin for a while now. Over the years, trade rumors have surfaced about the Celtics possibly pursuing Griffin from the time he was with the Clippers, to now being with the Pistons.

Adding Griffin to the mix in the frontcourt would help Boston more than they would imagine and here is why. Outside of Daniel Theis and Tristan Thompson, the Celtics do not have much of a frontcourt and those two players alone do not contribute much to this team as it is.

With Jayson Tatum playing the power-forward position, this Celtics team is very small at times and struggles to defend bigger, more physical teams that play through the low-post. Not to mention, outside of Tatum, Brown and Walker, this team struggles to find production, especially with Marcus Smart out with a calf strain.

Not only would Blake Griffin be able to help the Celtics on the offensive side of things, but he could really step into a bigger role and become Boston’s fourth or fifth best scoring option. Over the years, Griffin has always been one of the “go-to” guys for his team and has taken a lot of shots, but being able to sit back a little bit and let the game come to him this time may not be so bad.

Durability and injury concerns are definitely yellow flags for Griffin at this point in his career and not being asked to take on a lot of the pressure could really help him become a solid role player, kind of like Paul Millsap has become for the Nuggets. He was once a dominant All-Star like power-forward, but as he has gotten older, he has slowly transitioned into a role player for the Nuggets, who just made it to the Western Conference Finals last season.

The addition of Blake Griffin would not immediately vault the Celtics into the NBA Finals, especially given the talent of other teams in the East, but it definitely gives them that extra jolt of firepower they could utilize in their starting rotation, as well as their second-rotation.

This year’s Celtics team is a very athletic group of young players and bringing in an athletic veteran to bolster their depth in the frontcourt would go a long way in their success. It makes perfect sense for Blake Griffin to be a target for Boston and pairing him with Kemba, Brown and Tatum gives the Celtics one heck of a starting lineup on paper.
