Why This Trade Would Benefit The Dallas Mavericks
The trade for Kristaps Porzingis is not looking so good anymore for Dallas. Who would have thought? Porzingis played 57 games a season ago for the Mavericks and has been limited to 17 this season. He missed time early on but has been back and producing. This gives Dallas a chance to cash in on any extra value if they are looking for a trade partner.
We mentioned before that Collins did not sign an extension with the Hawks this offseason. This was after being offered $90 million. Some would say that he is interested in going somewhere else. Teaming up with Luka Doncic should be an extremely attractive scenario for any player, but especially Collins.
John Collins has thrived playing with Trae Young and that would only grow from having Luka Doncic leading the way. He would also be cheaper than Kristaps Porzingis. He is making $29.4 million this season and it only goes up. Next season, Dallas owes him $31.6 million, then $33.8 million, and finally $36 million in 2023-2024.
This trade would give the Mavericks their replacement star down low while shedding major cap. John Collins would come in right away and be ready to product for Dallas.
