Why This Trade Would Benefit The Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks are another team that has not been shy about making the big move recently. They were aggressive in the offseason in hopes of making the postseason this year.
The Eastern Conference has proved to be very top heavy so even at 11-14, the Hawks are right in the thick of the playoff race. Collins is a player that they would definitely like to keep around but it might not be possible.
John Collins is in the final year of his rookie contract. He is a restricted free agent at the end of the season and the Hawks would be able to match any deal with the qualifying offer. The fact that the two sides were unable to get a deal done on an extension is very telling.
While the Hawks might not want to trade John Collins at this time, it might be their best option. Harrell would be a short-term option for Atlanta and would replace Collins immediately. Atlanta could even sign him longer if they feel the need. Horton-Tucker is an intriguing piece of this deal because of his potential at just 20-years old.
The Hawks will continue to be aggressive at the NBA trade deadline. We will find out whether that means acquiring another star or sending one of theirs away.
