The New York Knicks could use some help in the talent department to help make a playoff push. One option that has stood out for quite some time has been Derrick Rose from the Detroit Pistons.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Pistons are engaged in ‘active talks’ with the Pistons to execute a trade for Derrick Rose.
“The New York Knicks are engaged in active talks to acquire the Pistons guard, a move that would reunite the former NBA MVP with head coach Tom Thibodeau, sources tell The Athletic.
“The Pistons and Rose mutually agreed that a trade would be best for both sides, per sources. While there is a great deal of respect for one another, the rebuilding Pistons plan to increase their usage of young players as the season progresses, according to those sources. Rose, meanwhile, has continued to show on the floor that he could improve a team that is in title or playoff contention.”
Both the Pistons and Derrick Rose agreeing that a trade is mutually beneficial makes the most sense. Detroit may not have Killian Hayes healthy after he went down with a season-ending injury, but Rose is on a one-year deal and it doesn’t make sense to re-sign.
It’s unclear what the Knicks would give up in a potential trade for Derrick Rose. New York does have plenty of recently drafted young players and draft compensation on favorable contracts to offer the Pistons in a potential deal.
Derrick Rose already has familiarity with the Knicks organization. After his time with the Chicago Bulls came to an end, the next time he played for was the Knicks in 2016-17. During that season, he appeared in 64 games and posted averages of 18.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists.
In 15 games this season, Derrick Rose is averaging 14.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists off the bench. He has managed to stay healthy playing in an off-the-bench role with his workload being closely managed.
