Wayne Ellington
Now in his 12th season in the league, Wayne Ellington is an older, more established player who has always been a reliable bench player everywhere he has been. Ellington is a member of the Detroit Pistons this season, the 9th NBA franchise he has played for and through 11 games, he has looked very solid.
This year, Wayne Ellington is averaging 11.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and is shooting 51.7% from the floor and 50% from three-point range. His hot start to the year has made him a prime trade target for a lot of teams and given the Mavs struggles from outside, they could really benefit from adding the veteran wing.
For his career, Ellington has shot 38.1% from deep and would be a big addition to the Mavericks’ second-unit. Josh Richardson being out due to health and safety protocols has definitely hurt Dallas’ outside shooting, but with him back and an established veteeran like Ellington off-the-bench, the Mavs would finally have the firepower to be a legit Top-5 team in the West.
With Dallas rolling out smaller lineups usually, with Dorian Finney-Smith playing the 4 at times, there are plenty of opportunities for guys to step up on the wing next to TIm Hardaway Jr. which is exactly why Ellington would be a great fit.
With him being owed just $2.5M this season, he is an easy trade target for virtually any team in the league and for the Mavericks, a team with not much salary space, trading for him would be very simple. The only question is what the Pistons would want in return for the veteran.
The Mavericks would likely have to give up a young player and possibly a second-round pick, but with them having title aspirations moving forward, this trade may be beneficial for them now, especially given the boost Ellington can give this Mavs’ second-unit.
