Why This Trade Would Benefit The San Antonio Spurs

We mentioned that the contract of LaMarcus Aldridge is not an issue for the Miami Heat given the current state of their franchise. For the San Antonio Spurs, it causes a bit of a problem. A rebuilding team should always look to send away a $24-million contract of a 35-year old player.

San Antonio likely will not re-sign Aldridge in free agency or give him an extension. This means the team should trade him for a bit of a return before they get nothing. This would work in the case of both Aldridge and DeRozan, who is making upwards of $27 million this season after opting into his contract for the 2020-21 NBA season.

The Spurs are not in a position to win a championship this season. Aldridge would better serve a team looking to contend and improve in the frontcourt. That is where Miami would come into play.

It will not take long for the Spurs to return to the postseason. They have one of the best coaches in the NBA and are a franchise that is extremely well run.
