Why This Trade Would Benefit The Atlanta Hawks
Clint Capela is in the third year of a five-year, $90 million contract. The Atlanta Hawks know that it will have other big contracts to sign in the near future. Among other benefits, this deal would clear up some cap space in order to sign those deals.
Right now, the Hawks are not in a position to compete for a championship. They are making strides towards the postseason and it showed in free agency. The Hawks signed both Danilo Gallinari and Rajon Rondo to give the team some veteran help. Theis would continue this goal.
Daniel Theis would immediately takeover for Capela and give the Hawks a productive, cheaper option down low. Meanwhile, Onyeka Okongwu could take over at the center spot once Theis’ contract expires. The Hawks would also get a first-round pick as a sweetener in this deal.
The Hawks have their future in place and now it is all about adding the right players for depth. It will be interesting to see what else the front office does moving forward.
