This Raptors-Bulls trade would send Zach LaVine to Toronto

When he entered the NBA in 2014 as a 19-year old wing, Chicago Bulls star Zach LaVine was a very unpolished player, but had a lot of potential to be an All-Star talent one day due to his athletic abilities. During his first three years in Minnesota, the 6’6” guard consistently got better as a scorer attacking the paint on the drive, but also started to develop an outside game from the perimeter as well.

During the 2017 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and the rights to Lauri Markkanen (the 7th pick in the 2017 NBA draft), to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Jimmy Butler and the rights to Justin Patton (the 16th pick in the 2017 NBA draft). This trade shocked a lot of NBA fans as Jimmy Butler was the “successor” to Derrick Rose and was supposed to be the savior of the Bulls, but the narrative quickly changed to Zach LaVine.

Since joining the Bulls, Zach LaVine has been their best player year-in and year-out, averaging 22.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.2 steals and shooting 43.3% from the floor and 36.5% from three-point range. LaVine has been this organization’s only bright spot as they have won just 71 games since acquiring him as they have been rebuilding for years now.

With a sustainable young core finally in place and LaVine coming off an All-Star like season, the Bulls seem to have a path to success set up for them, but it is yet to be known if Zach LaVine will be at the forefront of Chicago’s plans moving forward. With two years left on his contract, including this year, and him playing at the highest level of his career, the Bulls could look to trade him while his value is at his peak and gain more young assets in the process.

The Toronto Raptors are a team who has consistently been amongst the top of the Eastern Conference for years now, but after starting off the 2020-21 NBA season slowly, they find themselves near the bottom of the East and in trouble if they do not turn things around quickly. By midseason, if their struggles still persist, then they could absolutely be a team that looks to trade for the Bulls’ star player.

Let’s take a look at a potential trade where the Bulls would send Zach LaVine up north to the Toronto Raptors.
