Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Detroit Pistons

Derrick Rose put together a solid season for the Detroit Pistons last year and played in 50 games for them, but after drafting Killian Hayes 7th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft to be the point guard of the future, the Pistons may be very willing to trade Rose and get something for him since he is not in their long-term plans moving forward. 

This NBA season, with the team looking to get Killian Hayes as much experience at point guard as possible, Rose does not have that big of a role other than being involved with the second-unit. The Pistons need draft picks and young talent, which is exactly what they could get from the Lakers for Derrick Rose. 

Both picks Detroit receives in this trade could then be packaged together to gain another pick this year, or they could keep both to continue drafting young talent to add to their roster. Getting a first-round pick for a veteran player like Rose would be extremely valuable to Detroit and aid in their efforts of a quick rebuild.

Talen Horton-Tucker could also be extremely valuable to the Pistons in their efforts to finally put together a winning team. Last year in 38 G-League games, THT averaged 18.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and shot 42.3% from the floor. As mentioned earlier, Horton-Tucker also had a fantastic preseason for the Lakers. 

For a team looking to stockpile as much young talent with potential, both Caruso and Horton-Tucker could fit into the Detroit Pistons’ rebuild plans moving forward and be two impact role players off the bench. Derrick Rose is going to be a free agent after this season and for Detroit, it is better to trade him and get a lot of value for him instead of letting him leave with nothing in return.
