Dallas Mavericks Receive: F DeMar DeRozan
San Antonio Spurs Receive: G Tim Hardaway Jr, F Dorian Finney-Smith & DAL 2021 2nd Round Pick
Not only is DeMar DeRozan on an expiring contract, making a trade for him extremely do-able for any team in the league, but he is still an NBA All-Star level player. Last season with the San Antonio Spurs, DeRozan averaged 22.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and shot 53.1% from the floor.
Since being traded to the Spurs in 2018 in the Kawhi Leonard trade, DeRozan has embraced his new team and has been their leader for the last two years. His offensive production and veteran leadership has helped this Spurs organization remain in playoff contention over the years and he is a guy that can be brought into any organization and make an immediate impact, which is why the Dallas Mavericks are a perfect fit for him.
On the other side of things, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Dorian Finney-Smith have been great role players for the Mavs, but they would definitely be willing to part with them if it meant acquiring a talent like DeMar DeRozan.
Last year, Tim Hardaway Jr. averaged 15.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and shot 43.4% from the floor and 39.8% from three-point range. Over the course of his career, he has consistently been a high-level three-point shooter, which would help the San Antonio Spurs greatly. Dorian Finney-Smith is more of a defensive-minded player, which is why he would fit in perfectly with the Spurs.
San Antonio is in a better position than most teams that miss the playoffs and they are always looking to acquire solid role players to put around their core of youthful talent. Let’s take a look at why this trade makes sense for both the Mavericks and Spurs.
