Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Cleveland Cavaliers
When LeBron James is not a part of the Cleveland Cavaliers organization, it seems like they are doomed for a losing season and a long, drawn out rebuild process. Well, LeBron is not walking through those doors anymore, which means it will be yet another losing season for Cleveland, but they do have some bright spots moving forward.
Collin Sexton, Darius Garland and rookie Isaac Okoro all have a lot of potential moving forward and could be the three core players they look to build around for the foreseeable future.
Last season, Collin Sexton averaged 20.8 points, 3.0 assists and shot 47.2% from the floor, 38% from three-point range.
After leading the team in scoring for the first time in his career, Collin Sexton could be even better this season and possess All-Star-like potential for the Cavs moving forward. He is the focal point of this team for years to come and should continue to improve as an offensive weapon this year.
The 2020-21 NBA season will all be about getting this young team experience together moving forward and the best thing the Cavaliers can do is to continue acquiring draft picks and cut ties with large contracts. As a result, both Kevin Love and Andre Drummond are two players who could be on the move sooner than later.
Trading Drummond for Davis Bertans, Thomas Bryant and a first-round pick makes a lot of sense for Cleveland for a couple of reasons. First, Bertans is one of the best three-point shooters in the league and can help them be one of the better three-point shooting teams in the league.
Another major problem for the Cavaliers right now is that they do not have much frontcourt depth and will need to address this, especially if they trade Kevin Love and/or Andre Drummond. Thomas Bryant has had three straight successful seasons and seems to be getting better as a shot-blocker and rebounder. The last two seasons with the Wizards, Bryant has averaged 11.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.0 block and has shot 59.9% from the floor and 37% from three-point range.
Adding two young front court players to this young roster would go a long way in speeding up the rebuild process for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the first-round pick that they would be receiving in this trade could be the player they need to turn this franchise around. Trading away Andre Drummond makes more sense for the Cavs now than holding onto him long-term.
