Who Will Be The Backup Point Guard?

Jalen Brunson missed the NBA restart in Orlando due to a shoulder injury that sidelined him at the end of last season and in his place, the Mavericks signed Trey Burke to be an extra player on their roster in the NBA Bubble. What Dallas did not know though was that Trey Burke was coming to play and had a terrific showing for the Mavs.

In the Mavericks’ 8 seeding games, Burke averaged 12.0 points, 3.8 assists and shot 43.2% from three-point range, ultimately ending up as one of their best scoring options down the stretch. Trey Burke has proven himself to be a solid bench player for the Mavs moving forward and as a result, they re-signed him to a three-year, $10M deal this offseason.

With the emergence of Trey Burke as a legit scoring and facilitator for this Mavericks’ offense, there could be a competition early on in the season between him and Brunson for minutes at the point guard position. Before getting injured, Jalen Brunson was having a solid second season in the league, averaging 8.2 points, 3.3 assists and shooting 46.6% from the floor.

Both players are expected to have an impact on this team moving forward, especially with no Seth Curry in the backcourt anymore, but Trey Burke seems to be the guy who will see more court time when it matters most for Dallas early on in the year. Brunson is still not 100% yet and with Burke’s ability to shoot from the perimeter, it will give Luka Doncic another weapon to utilize with Porzingis being out.

Expect to see Trey Burke continue to make an impact on the Dallas Mavericks this season and potentially end up being one of their “go-to” guys off of the bench throughout the season.
