LeBron James Will Not Average Above 10 Assists Again

Last season, LeBron James reached a new milestone in his career as he led the league in assists. James had never achieved this feat in his career and as a result, led the Lakers to their 17th championship and first title since 2010.

This season, with the acquisition of point guard Dennis Schroder, LeBron James will not average double-digit assists over the course of the season because he will not have to average double-digit assists for them to be successful. LeBron averaged 10.2 assists last season and the next closest player to him in assists per game on the Lakers roster was Rajon Rondo with 5.0 assists per game.

Rondo is now a member of the Atlanta Hawks and while it would appear that James would be slated to have another year where he could lead the league in assists, Dennis Schroder will come in and take a lot of the pressure off of LeBron James.

Schroder has not been known to be a high-assist point guard over his career, averaging just 4.6 assists per game, but given all of the weapons on the Lakers and the fact that he will likely be the team’s starting point guard, he will likely average between 6-8 assists per game. His ability to thrive in pick-and-roll situations as a passer will be a key for success for the Lakers this upcoming season as AD, Marc Gasol Montrezl Harrell are all big guys who thrive in pick-and-roll situations.

LeBron James will do whatever it takes for his team to win and while it may mean sacrificing a chance to lead the league in assists for back-to-back years, he will do it if it means it sets his team up for success.
