Giannis Antetokounmpo wanted Bucks to pursue Bradley Beal trade

The Milwaukee Bucks had a busy NBA offseason that ended with Giannis Antetokounmpo signing a supermax contract extension. A key factor in those efforts was trading for Jrue Holiday but the two-time MVP had another star player in mind as a trade target.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Kevin Arnovitz, Antetokounmpo wanted the Bucks to improve in the backcourt and wanted them to target Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal via trade.

“In addition to [Bodgdan] Bogdanovic, he cited Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal as a desirable target for the Bucks,” Windhorst and Arnovitz reported. “Without impugning specific teammates, Antetokounmpo was implicitly suggesting what just about everyone in the organization — and the NBA — knew: The Bucks needed to upgrade their backcourt.”

The Bucks initially tried to acquire Bogdan Bogdanovic in a sign-and-trade transaction with the Sacramento Kings. That ultimately fell through and caused Milwaukee to have to shift course in terms of pursuing Jrue Holiday from the New Orleans Pelicans instead.

It would be interesting to see if the Bucks would have had enough to land Bradley Beal in a potential trade. When considering how he was the NBA’s highest volume scorer behind James Harden and is only 27-years-old, it would have been more difficult.

The Bucks had a clear objective to improve in the backcourt since Eric Bledsoe simply wasn’t getting the job done. Holiday will play a major role in what Milwaukee will accomplish in the near future but now, it will be done without the intensive pressure of convincing Antetokounmpo to stay long-term.

Based on how the Milwaukee Bucks’ offseason played out, it seems there should be enough talent around Giannis Antetokounmpo to achieve their goals. If the two-time NBA MVP continues to improve his offensive skill-set then they will b in a great position to get it done.
