The San Antonio Spurs did not qualify for the postseason for the first time in 22 years this past season. The New York Knicks have not been back to the playoffs since their 54-win season in 2012-13. Heading into the regular season, both teams could look to make a deal to improve— particularly one centered around DeMar DeRozan.
The Knicks have turned into one of the biggest dumpster fires in all of sports. They have an owner who is not fit to own a team and have not been able to nail down a head coach. New York finally made the hire of Tom Thibodeau. He is hoping to turn the Knicks in the right direction but he needs some good players on the floor.
The Spurs might have a fit for the Knicks. DeMar DeRozan may not be a long-term answer for San Antonio given they appear headed for a rebuild. Meanwhile, the Knicks have already added prospects through the NBA Draft but could use more proven playmakers.
If the Knicks are serious about moving up the Eastern Conference standings, it will take an established veteran leading the way to help get it done. Other teams have made real strides in roster construction and simply waiting for young players to get better won’t be enough.
As the Knicks continue their long rebuild, they will look to add a star player to the equation. Here is what a deal might look like that lands them DeRozan this offseason.
