Why This Trade Makes Sense For The Lakers
On the other side of the trade, the Lakers would be taking a swing on potential with this trade. Alex Caruso fits with L.A. and would have a similar role this year as he did last. Trading him for Dennis Smith Jr. could end up being a flop, or it could end up being a massive win.
Smith could end up becoming a key role player for the Lakers. He has the explosive athleticism to wreak havoc when getting to the rim. His three-point shooting is questionable at best, which needs to be improved.
The addition of a 2021 second-round pick from the Detroit Pistons would be nice as well. L.A. could use that in a future trade or could take a young talent with the selection.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis don’t need a ton more help. They already have a stacked roster around them. That is another reason the Lakers can make this trade, simply because it won’t mess them up one way or the other.
At this point in time, the Lakers can make small trades based on potential. Smith needs a new home and Los Angeles could be that home. It’s worth a shot.
