Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers had one of the better offseasons in the NBA and have made it clear that they are “all-in” on contending for a championship with their current roster. They not only went out and traded away Al Horford, but they brought in Danny Green, Seth Curry, Dwight Howard, and rookie Tyrese Maxey.
The 76ers’ biggest problem last season was that Tobias Harris did not produce when it mattered most and when Simmons went down with an injury. Simply put, the 76ers did not have anyone that could produce outside of Joel Embiid. This offseason, they went out and got some role players who can provide immediate scoring when their name is called.
With new head coach Doc Rivers and new President of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey, the 76ers were rumored to be pursuing James Harden this offseason, but nothing ever developed and it seems like Harden will remain with the Rockets for this upcoming season. This will not stop the 76ers though from being aggressive and doing everything they can to land a big name player via trade to pair with Simmons and Embiid.
Tobias Harris is the guy that will likely be on the move for the 76ers as he is owed $33M this upcoming season and is under contract through the 2023-24 season. It may be hard to ask a team to take on his massive contract, but if any of the big contracts in Philly will be on the move, it will be Harris.
Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid are likely to remain with the 76ers for the foreseeable future and are in Philadelphia’s long-term plans to win a championship. Tobias Harris is the only questionable contract on the roster as they are tied down on cap space as a result and could not absorb an All-Star level talent’s contract without dumping Harris.
The 76ers could put themselves in a position to contend for numerous championships over the next several seasons if they are able to trade Tobias Harris for a big name talent sooner than later.
While Harris is a solid player, he is not the type of player that can be the third option on a championship team and as a result, is not worth the $150M he is owed over the next four seasons by the Philadelphia 76ers. They made a mistake with this contract in the first place and will not be legit championship contenders until they can trade Harris.
