Why This Trade Works for the Detroit Pistons
This honestly works out in Detroit’s favor though because of the fact they can dump both Blake Griffin’s contract and Derrick Rose’s contract, while getting something worthwhile in return. Westbrook is an All-Star level player and will continue being an All-Star for years to come because of his athletic abilities.
Russell Westbrook is arguably the best athlete in the NBA and with a young, athletic core in Detroit, the Pistons could easily go from one of the worst teams in the league, to a dangerous, high-flying and athletic team that opponents will have no answers on how to stop in transition. Up-and-down this Pistons roster at this moment, it is clear to see that they are looking to acquire athletes and shooters, which is where Westbrook fits in.
He is not much of a perimeter threat as of late, but Russell Westbrook is still one of the best passing point-guards in the league. The 9x All-Star led the league in assists from 2017-2019 and would have no problem continuing to be one of the league’s top assist men with the Detroit Pistons.
If the Pistons are to go after Russell Westbrook, it most likely would not be until around the trade deadline. It would make more sense for Detroit to see what their roster looks like in action this year before making a big move like this and see if they even need to include a player like Westbrook in their plans moving forward.
