Coby White, Chicago Bulls
Last season, Tomas Satoransky and Kris Dunn started for the Chicago Bulls, but with Dunn departing for the Atlanta Hawks in the offseason, Coby White could be the next young guard to start for the Chicago Bulls. Much like Aaron Holiday, White has a new head coach in Billy Donovan, who could be instrumental in White’s growth and development.
While with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Billy Donovan coached plenty of All-Star level talent and played a role in the development of players like Jerami Grant and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Donovan is a coach who is known for developing a lot of young talent, as he did so for years as the head coach of the Florida Gators, and should do a lot of the same things with White this upcoming season.
White is set up for a successful season in Chicago because he not only has a head coach who is dependent on getting scoring from his guards, but he has the natural scoring abilities to step up and be one of the main offensive weapons on this young Bulls roster. Last season, White averaged about 13 points per game while shooting 39.4% from the floor. This season, expect to see White in more pick-and-roll situations and set up to be a playmaker from the perimeter.
The reason White was drafted 7th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft was because of the success he had being a playmaker for Roy Williams at UNC. Whether it was being able to get to the rim and score off of screens or pull up and knock down a three-pointer, Coby White is an offensive minded guard who, in today’s NBA, can thrive in a system that allows him to have the ball.
Even if Coby White comes off the bench to begin the season, he will definitely be in the starting rotation near the end of the year and could be the difference maker in a few wins for Chicago. Overall, the Bulls will still be a bottom-of-the-pack team in the Eastern Conference, but White’s play this year will be a massive step in the right direction for a franchise that is looking to put all of their young pieces together.
