How the Brooklyn Nets are ready to contend for an NBA title

2020 NBA Draft

In this year’s draft, the Brooklyn Nets held the rights to picks No. 19 and No. 55, but did not hold onto either pick on draft night. They drafted Saddiq Bey with the 19th pick in the first-round, but ultimately traded him to the Pistons in a three-team trade that sent the rights to bey to Detroit, Luke Kennard to the Clippers and Landry Shamet to the Brooklyn Nets.

This was an excellent move by the Nets front office to acquire a young, talented shooting guard like Shamet because he can do a lot of positive things on the court. Not only can he hold his own defensively, but he is more athletic than he appears to be and can shoot at a pretty high-level.

In two seasons, Shamet has shot 40.2% from three-point range and next to two superstars like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, he will be used as a security blanket and knock-down-shooter, much like Joe Harris. The Miami Heat had a lot of success this past year with two young and big-time shooters in Duncan Robinson and Tyler Herro, so pairing Landry Shamet up with Joe Harris is what the Brooklyn Nets hope to replicate.

In the second round, the Nets drafted Jay Scrubb, a very talented JUCO product, and sent his draft rights to the Clippers. The Nets did not really need to use any of their draft picks this year for the fact that developing young talent does not help their immediate goal of contending this year. They drafted C Reggie Perry 57th overall in the second round of the draft as his rights were traded to the Nets via the Clippers. He is nothing more than a guy the Nets will look to develop over the years and it would come as a shock to many if he saw the court this upcoming season.

A late first round pick or second round pick most likely will be the difference in winning a championship, but key veteran players will be, which is why they went out in free agency and did what they did.
