Why This Trade Works for the Toronto Raptors
If the Toronto Raptors do not feel as though they want to commit major money to retain Kyle Lowry after the upcoming NBA season, capitalizing on his value in a trade now isn’t a requirement but is an option.
The sizable contract extension the Raptors provided Fred VanVleet could provide a reason to think twice about continuing to give substantial year-to-year deals to Lowry. Toronto has more roster holes than they previously did so simply going over the cap to keep talent isn’t as advantageous.
The combination of players the Raptors would receive in this scenario are quite intriguing. Tim Hardaway Jr. was an elite spot-up shooter last season and can create off the dribble. Meanwhile, Maxi Kleber can convert from deep while providing defensive versatility and some size.
There would be a drop off for the Raptors by moving on from Lowry. However, if they were to entertain moving him, adding some helpful role players and embracing VanVleet in a larger playmaking role seems to be the best course of action to take.
