3 trades Cleveland Cavaliers should pursue featuring Andre Drummond

Andre Drummond is a player who a lot of teams seem to have given up on but is still a heck of a big man. Last season, the Cleveland Cavaliers traded Brandon Knight, John Henson, and a 2023 second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons to acquire the former two-time NBA All-Star center, but with the youth movement in Cleveland, Drummond may not be in the future plans of the organization.

This offseason, Drummond opted into his $28.75M player option for the 2020-21 NBA season as he is now set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Andre Drummond’s contract this season takes up over 25% of a team’s total salary cap and if any team was to acquire him, they would likely move into the tax threshold for the 2020-21 season and have to pay more luxury taxes.

Multiple sources, including Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, believes that Andre Drummond will be moved closer to the trade deadline than before the start of the season. With Tristan Thompson departing for the Boston Celtics, it makes sense that Cleveland would hang on to the 27-year old center longer than expected and possibly re-sign him to be the veteran on a very young team.

As for Drummond’s game, he may not be the stretch big man a lot of teams are looking for in today’s NBA, resulting in him receiving less and less attention, but he is still a monster on the glass. Over the course of his career, Andre Drummond has averaged 13.8 rebounds/game and since 2015, has led the league in rebounds per game in four different seasons!

Drummond is a low-post and more traditional big man who does not have an outside game, but he can still contribute to any team he is on and make a difference defensively.

If a contender is to trade for him, it will most definitely be near the NBA trade deadline as a result of his hefty contract. However, if Cleveland wants to move him immediately, here are three trades the Cavaliers could pursue to move Andre Drummond.
