The Charlotte Hornets have been stuck in mediocrity for the last few years and are looking to break out of that this offseason. After taking LaMelo Ball with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Hornets now have their attention on free agency. Could DeMarcus Cousins end up being their big-time splash on the market?
According to a report from Ross of Legion Hoops, the Hornets and Cousins have had discussions about a potential contract.
Cousins is not the star player that he once was. He has suffered back-to-back seasons full with injuries. However, he still could make an impact and be a quality big man for the Hornets.
Last season he started the year with the Los Angeles Lakers, but Cousins missed the entire season season after suffering a torn ACL. Back in the 2018-19 season with the Golden State Warriors, Cousins ended up playing in 30 games. He averaged 16.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.3 steals per game.
Needless to say, he was a stat stuffer with the Warriors. That isn’t to say that he would be the same stat stuffer with the Hornets, but he is worth the risk.
At 30 years old, DeMarcus Cousins still has some gas left in the tank. He would be able to come into Charlotte and immediate take over the starting center position. That alone would have to be intriguing for him, rather than playing in a supporting bench role elsewhere.
No one knows what teams have shown interest in Cousins, although the Houston Rockets have also been rumored to have interest.
Expect to hear more news about Cousins in the near future. He is a player who has received some interest on the open market and the Hornets appear to be a team to watch.
