Carmelo Anthony returns to Trail Blazers on one-year deal

After much talk abut a potential reunion with the New York Knicks, Carmelo Anthony opted to return to the Portland Trail Blazers.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Trail Blazers are finalizing a one-year deal with Carmelo Anthony. The terms of the deal later were released— showing he signed for the veteran’s minimum.

Last season, Anthony appears to finally find an NBA home with the Trail Blazers— after going through unsuccessful tenures with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets. He appeared in 58 games for Portland and averaged 15.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.

It remains to be seen what role the Trail Blazers will have for Anthony but it’s clear he is best suited to stay in Portland. The team that enabled him to play the style he is comfortable with isn’t something to take for granted and that likely played a critical role in his decision.

It has been a busy NBA offseason for the Trail Blazers. The team opted to trade Mario Hezonja for Enes Kanter, re-signed Rodney Hood, and used the Mid-Level Exception to sign Derrick Jones. Now, bringing back Anthony is a great way to complete their moves.

The Portland Trail Blazers will look to have a strong campaign during the upcoming NBA season. Will they manage to take down a team like the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs? Or will they come up short en route to advancing out of the Western Conference Finals?
