Wizards sign Davis Bertans to massive five-year deal

The Washington Wizards came into NBA free agency with one big thing in mind. They wanted to re-sign forward Davis Bertans. Thankfully, they were able to accomplish that goal on the first night.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Wizards have agreed to a massive five-year, $80 contract with Bertans to keep him in town.

Bertans just came through with his first breakout season in 2019-20 with the Wizards. For a player who has only had one big season, this deal may shock some fans. Whether or not the Wizards overpaid to keep him, only time will tell us.

During the 2019-20 NBA season with the Wizards, Bertans ended up averaging 15.4 points per game to go along with 4.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists. He shot 43.4 percent from the floor overall and knocked down 42.4 percent of his three-point attempts.

Standing in 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds, Bertans is the kind of stretch four that fits perfectly in today’s NBA. If he is open, he will make opposing defenses pay. That can cause mismatches against quite a few teams.

Washington will now look ahead to the 2020-21 season with John Wall and Bradley Beal as their top franchise players. Bertans could very well end up being the third offensive option and Thomas Bryant is coming into his own as well.

Obviously, the Wizards are excited to be able to get this deal done. It’s expensive, but they are confident that Davis Bertans will prove them right for pulling the trigger.

Expect to hear more rumors surrounding the Wizards. They may not make any other sizable moves, but they will certainly consider anything that can help them make a push at the playoffs in 2020-21.
