The Los Angeles Lakers are coming off a successful run at an NBA championship but will look to re-tool in free agency around LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The team already acquired Dennis Schroder via trade but has also now been linked to Marc Gasol.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, she has heard that Gasol is a potential option for the Lakers in free agency. Los Angeles has also been continually linked to Dwight Howard in terms of center options as well.
There were initially rumors about Gasol being interested in ending his professional basketball career in Europe— hinting his time in the NBA could be finished. Could an opportunity to win another championship as a member of the Lakers be enticing enough to stick around? Especially, with the opportunity to play with talents like LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
When evaluating the potential fit for Gasol with the Lakers, it’s clear how it would work on paper. His ability to anchor the paint alongside Anthony Davis’ versatility out on the perimeter would elevate the unit. Meanwhile, Gasol’s jump shooting and passing would add layers to the offense.

The Lakers had utilized interior oriented big men like Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee alongside Davis and experienced success. However, being able to have a floor spacing option like Gasol would add further potential to an already impressive offense.
During the 2019-20 NBA season, Gasol appeared in 44 regular season games for the Toronto Raptors— posting averages of 7.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. He continued to be an important element of their team alongside Pascal Siakam in the frontcourt.
