Hornets expected to make push to sign Gordon Hayward

The Charlotte Hornets have been stuck in mediocrity over the last couple of years and that might be putting it nicely. Now, with LaMelo Ball selection at No. 3 overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, things may be changing. It appears the Hornets may be targeting Gordon Hayward in free agency.

According to a report from Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, the Hornets are expected to make a push to sign Hayward when free agency opens.

Hayward has been one of the most talked about names in the NBA so far this offseason. Plenty of teams have been rumored to have interest in acquiring him. Among those teams are the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, and Atlanta Hawks.

At this point in time, the Hawks seem to be focusing elsewhere. Tons of rumors have connected Hayward to the Pacers in a sign-and-trade, but the two sides have work to do to come to an agreement. The Knicks have a big offer planned for Hayward, but he may not be interested.

Now, the Hornets are showing interest. Could he choose to sign with a young team that could be on the rise over the next few years?

Charlotte could offer Gordon Hayward the chance to come in and be the primary offensive focal point. He would be able to re-establish his status as a legitimate star in the NBA. That could be something that grabs his interest.

In addition to the role he would play with the Hornets, Hayward would be getting a nice contract from Charlotte. They have plenty of cap space to work with.

This is something to keep a close eye on with NBA free agency close to opening. While the Hornets are the “sexy” destination for Hayward, they could be a legitimate threat.
