Fred VanVleet to meet with Raptors and ‘1 or 2’ other teams soon

The Toronto Raptors will face the need to bring back some of their key players with Fred VanVleet sitting atop the list of priorities. He is widely considered the top available NBA free agent this offseason.

According to Rogers Sportnet’s Michael Grange, VanVleet will meet with the Raptors and 1 or 2 other suitors Saturday in Chicago. The other two teams weren’t listed but most likely are one of the few with cap space.

The current expectation is the Raptors will re-sign VanVleet but there will be no shortage of interested suitors to compete against. The main threat to sign him appears to be the New York Knicks as they are the team with the most cap space and a need at point guard.

It will be a busy NBA offseason for the Raptors as not only VanVleet is the top available unrestricted free agent this offseason, but Serge Ibaka is commanding strong interest from around the league. Will Toronto be able to bring them both back? It remains to be seen.

If VanVleet does indeed return to the Raptors, he will position himself to take over a large role once Kyle Lowry is no longer a member of the team. When considering Lowry is already 34-years-old, his days in Toronto could be numbered, at least to an extent.

During the 2019-20 NBA season, Fred VanVleet provided the Toronto Raptors with averages of 17.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.9 steals. He build on his career-year and raised his game to even further heights for the defending NBA champions.
