Dallas Mavericks looking to trade Delon Wright as free agency opens

The Dallas Mavericks used the 2020 NBA Draft to add some intriguing talents to their roster. Beginning with taking Josh Green with the No. 18 selection, then followed up by a trade for Josh Richardson, it’s clear the team is not satisfied with just running it back.

According to Hoops Legion Ross, the Mavericks are looking to trade Wright— who is owed just over $17 million during the next two seasons.

It has been apparent that Wright never quite managed to get on the same page with head coach Rick Carlisle. Wright has seemingly been disgruntled in the background since early in his first season with the Mavericks— proving to be a poor fit for both sides.

From a skill-set standpoint, he has the necessary attributes to be an effective complementary player alongside Luka Doncic. It just seems he’s not satisfied with playing such an off-ball focused role for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks no longer need to attempt to make things work with Wright. Dallas now has Josh Richardson to pair with Doncic and added Tyrell Terry with the No. 31 pick to help lead the second unit alongside Jalen Brunson.

It will be fascinating to see which team ends up making a trade with the Mavericks for Wright. He can contribute to a team in a genuinely meaningful role but it needs to be one that he engages with more.

During the 2019-20 NBA season, Delon Wright appeared in 73 regular season games for the Dallas Mavericks. He posted averages of 21.5 minutes, 6.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in a role that ended up featuring him coming off the bench.
