The Dallas Mavericks were more than excited to be able to snag Stanford guard Tyrell Terry with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. They fully expected Terry to be gone in the top 20 picks, but that didn’t end up being the case.
Now that he knows where he will begin his NBA career, Terry cannot wait to get things started. He opened up a bit about what the Mavericks will be getting with him. Also, he opened up how he will fit with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis specifically.
Take a look at what Terry had to say for yourself, via Mavs Money Ball:
“I think for me, just the way I’m able to shoot the ball, I’m going to be a valuable tool for Luka, especially off pick-and-rolls and finding shooters and also being a secondary ball handler for that role as well. Being able to create — space the floor for Kristaps is going to be important, I think. So I think I’ll be a very good fit for them.”
Speaking of Terry’s shooting ability, he was able to connect on 40.8 percent of his three-point attempts last season with Stanford. He also averaged 14.6 points per game to go along with 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Those numbers aren’t too shabby and will look good for the Mavericks.
NBADraft.net compared Terry to Portland Trail Blazers star C.J. McCollum. That comparison may not end up being accurate, but it certainly adds intrigue.
It will be interesting to see how Tyrell Terry fits with the Mavericks. They were a piece or two away from contending for the NBA Finals last season. Terry won’t come in and be that piece as a rookie, but he will help the team moving forward.
Expect to see Terry come in and get to work immediately with the Mavericks. He is going to be a quality player and Dallas will be happy that they selected him.
