The Dallas Mavericks have had interest in finding a way to acquire Danilo Gallinari this offseason and it appears that they may be getting close to getting it done. While Gallinari is set to hit free agency this offseason, the Oklahoma City Thunder could supply a sign-and-trade option for Dallas.
According to a report from NBA reporter Matt Babcock, the Mavericks and Thunder are in deep trade talks surrounding a sign-and-trade that would send Gallinari to Dallas and the No. 18 overall pick in tonight’s draft to the Thunder.
Gallinari would be a huge addition for the Mavericks. They are looking for a third top-notch piece to play alongside Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. He would offer the exact kind of fit that Dallas needs.
As for the Thunder, Sam Presti has done an amazing job of gathering draft assets. He has pulled off two trades so far this offseason, with Dennis Schroder heading to the Lakers and Chris Paul being sent to the Suns.
This would be another big deal for the Thunder. Being able to get a first-round pick out of a player who was already planning to leave anyway would be a big plus. Not to mention, getting the Mavericks’ No. 18 pick could bring a solid young piece.
During the 2019-20 NBA season with the Thunder, Gallinari ended up averaging 18.7 points per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists. He also shot 43.8 percent from the floor and 40.5 percent from the three-point line.
Obviously, this deal has not been completed just yet. The two sides seem to be working towards a deal, however, and it could get done before the NBA Draft.
Expect to hear more news about this in the near future. Both sides seem motivated to get something done and it seems likely that Danilo Gallinari could be on his way to the Mavericks soon.
