Multiple NBA contenders discussing trade for Spencer Dinwiddie

The Brooklyn Nets have made headlines as the preferred landing spot for Houston Rockets superstar James Harden. They will be busy this NBA offseason making other moves to build around Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Could that involve trading Spencer Dinwiddie?

According to SNY’s Ian Begley, multiple Western Conference contenders have internally discussed the possibility of a trade for Spencer Dinwiddie.

We don’t know if the Nets have any desire to trade Dinwiddie, but we know that several Western Conference contenders have talked internally about Dinwiddie as a potential trade target. And Dinwiddie, Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert would probably be in any Harden-to-Brooklyn deal.

The Nets have to be careful with how they handle Dinwiddie’s situation. He is set to be a free agent after the upcoming NBA season. If the Nets do end up retaining Joe Harris on a new contract, the salary cap burden of re-signing Dinwiddie next offseason would be tough.

Per Begley, there is a possibility that Dinwiddie could draw interest from various teams with cap space— meaning the Nets could risk losing him for nothing by not executing a trade this offseason.

If Dinwiddie has another strong season for Brooklyn in 2020-21, he’ll probably draw interest from several teams with cap space in 2021. So the Nets would risk losing him without compensation. That’s why I think they will at least gauge the market for Dinwiddie trades in the offseason.

The signs that Dinwiddie has shown as one of the primary options of an offense is intriguing but there are concerns about his fit with star players. His lack of efficient perimeter shooting is a legitimate liability and inconsistency as a pull-up shooter doesn’t help either.

When factoring in that Dinwiddie will have to fit alongside not only just Kyrie Irving and Caris LeVert, but now Kevin Durant, too, it’s worthwhile for the Nets to consider executing a trade. There’s too much ball-handling and not enough off-ball impact.

It will be fascinating to see how the Brooklyn Nets navigate their NBA offseason moves. All eyes are on them after being linked to James Harden, but there will be no shortage of alternative options to pursue if the Houston Rockets prove to make that negotiation complicated.
