The Minnesota Timberwolves will set the tone for the 2020 NBA Draft by holding the No. 1 pick. Will they use it to select an intriguing prospect like Anthony Edwards or LaMelo Ball? Or will they trade it to pair a star with Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell?
According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, trade talks are still ‘heavily in play’ for the Timberwolves with the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.
“Trade talks are still heavily in play for this pick, but most NBA teams are now getting the sense that Edwards is the likely selection if the Wolves stay put. He brings a positional fit with D’Angelo Russell and Karl-Anthony Towns, while Wiseman and Ball would overlap with those franchise cornerstones.”
There are valid concerns about both Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball that could justify the Timberwolves favoring trading the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. Minnesota must be certain whichever option they pursue with this selection that it’s going to work.
The Timberwolves have struggled to win during the Karl-Anthony Towns era and time could soon run out to turn it around. There have already been rumblings about how he may want to depart if things don’t turn around.

The aggressive move the Timberwolves made to trade for Jimmy Butler resulted in a playoff appearance but chemistry resulted in the situation not sustaining. That suggests it’s not a guarantee that trading the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft would translate to long-term success.
